Senior Director in the Ministry of Transport, Elsa Binns, is predicting that by the year 2020, deaths from road traffic accidents are expected to exceed HIV and AIDS cases.

Mrs. Binns was speaking at the presentation of the results of a survey of Male Drivers in Jamaica by the Pan American Health Organization and the National Road Safety Council.

The study has revealed that of the 162 fatal accidents this year, 10 more than 2005, 96 per cent is caused by young male drivers.

In light of these figures Senior Superintendent of Police, Elan Powell is calling for the amendment of the Road Traffic Act to facilitate stricter laws for traffic offences.

Mrs. Binns said the Ministry is in the process of reviewing the legislation.
