| HIV/AIDS infection rate remains low in Viet Nam, says survey |

 Ha Noi (VNA) - The spread of HIV/AIDS has yet to become a common epidemic in Viet Nam, according to the results of a survey released in Ha Noi on June 20.
The 2005 Viet Nam Population and AIDS Indicator Survey (VPAIS), jointly conducted by the Ministry of Health, the General Statistics Office and the US President's Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, showed that nine out of nearly 1,700 local people in northern Hai Phong city, who voluntarily donated their blood samples, were found to be infected with HIV/AIDS, representing a half percent.
Only blood samples in Hai Phong were collected but questionnaires on HIV/AIDS-related issues had been distributed nationwide for the survey.
An earlier survey conducted by Vietnamese agencies also showed that the rate of HIV/AIDS infections in the Red River Delta province of Thai Binh was 0.3 percent, while that in Ho Chi Minh City was 0.7 percent.
However, only 6 percent of the surveyed women have been provided with consultancy services about HIV/AIDS and HIV tests during their pregnancies. Worse still, up to 50 percent of the inquired people do not know how to prevent the transmission of HIV from mothers to their children.-Enditem | | |
